About WD Red, Red Plus & Red Pro NAS HDD
In 2020 it emerged that some WD Red models (such as the WD20EFAX, WD40EFAX and WD60EFAX) used SMR recording, which can make RAID rebuilds extremely slow or cause them to fail. WD then renamed its conventional drives Red Plus. If your NAS failed during a rebuild with these drives, the original data is often still recoverable from the members.

How can I tell SMR and CMR Red drives apart?
By model number. EFAX models are SMR; EFRX, EFZX, EFPX and Red Pro models are CMR.
