About WD My Passport, Elements & My Book
Most My Passport, My Passport Ultra and My Book drives have the USB connector built onto the drive board, with hardware encryption always switched on. If that board is damaged, the encryption key has to be recovered from the original board – fitting a donor board or a new case will not give you your files back. Elements drives generally do not encrypt, but many still use built-in USB boards.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put my My Passport drive into a new case?
No. On most models the encryption is tied to the original board, so another case cannot read it. Send us the whole drive.
I forgot my WD Security password. Can you unlock it?
No. Without the password the encrypted data cannot be read. Check password managers and old notes first.
What happens after I send the drive in?
We carry out a professional evaluation (£94.80), then send you a fixed quote and a list of recoverable files before any recovery work is charged.
