About the MacBook Pro 15"
The 2011 A1286 is known for graphics chip failures. The 2016–2019 A1707 and A1990 used the butterfly keyboard, and the A1707 is known for display cable wear.
The A1286 and A1398 have removable drives, so data recovery is often straightforward. The A1707 and A1990 have soldered storage.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing an older 15-inch MacBook Pro?
Often, for the files or for light use. An SSD makes an A1286 usable again; on an A1398 a new battery and SSD go a long way.
Can you get the data off a 2011 MacBook Pro with a graphics fault?
Yes. Its drive is removable, so we can copy it even if the Mac won’t start.
How do I find my MacBook model number?
The A-number (for example A2337) is printed in small text on the underside. Apple menu > About This Mac shows the year and size.
