In 2023 some Extreme Portable SSD V2 and Extreme PRO V2 drives, mainly 4TB models, were reported to lose data or become unreadable until a firmware update was issued. My 4TB Extreme V2 suddenly showed as empty. Is the data lost?
Not necessarily. Stop using it, do not format it, and send it in. Many of these drives are recoverable.
Should I install the firmware update before recovery?
No. Recover the data first; update the firmware afterwards if you keep the drive.
